A Process for the Preparation of Alkyl 4-Halophenylether Derivatives

The invention relates to alkyl phenyl ethers of the general formula in which R 1 is a nitro or alkanoyl amine group, R 2 is an alkyl, alkoxy carbonyl or alkanoyl group and X is a halogen atom and R 6 is an alkyl group. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula with a compound of a general formula R 3 #R4 R5 in which R 3 is an alkylidene group, R 4 is a hydrogen atom, R 5 is a halogen atom or the group SO 4 R 7 in which R 7 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group or R 4 and R 5 together form radical N 2 . Examples are given of the preparation of 2 - methoxy - 4 - acetamido - 5 - chloro acetophenone and 2 - methyl - 4 - chloro - 5 - nitroanisole. The starting materials of Formula (I) may be prepared for example, by adding sodium nitrite to an acidic solution of 4-chloro 5-nitro ortho toluidine to produce 4-chloro 5-nitro orthocresole or reacting 3-acetamido- 4-chlorophenyl acetate with anhydrous aluminium chloride to produce 2-hydroxy-4- acetamido-5-chloroacetophenone.
