1,133,728. Endotracheal tube. R. R. JACKSON. 30 Nov., 1965 [2 Dec., 1964], No. 50748/65. Headings A5R and A5T. An endotracheal tube 42 is provided with an inflatable cuff 40 made of a membrane which is permeable to local anaesthetics. The membrane may be made of regenerated cellulose, colloidion plastic materials rendered semipermeable by bombardment with particles from nuclear fission, silicon rubber or an animal membrane. In use, the tube is inserted into the trachea through the mouth of the patient and the cuff is inflated to engage a ring of tracheal tissue by introduction of a local anaesthetic e.g. an aqueous solution of lidocaine hydrochloride through supply tube 46. Air is supplied to the patient through tube 42 and local anaesthetic diffusing through cuff wall 48 anaesthetises the tracheal tissue thus comforting the patient. |
