A mixing device for the pump intake of an oil wee comprises a first tube and a second tube located inside the first tube with a plurality of apertures in the first tube at an upper end for taking up the oil, sand and gas mixture and a plurality of apertures in the second tube at a lower end for breaking up the sand particles in the oil and sand mixture. A region between the apertures in the first tube and the apertures in the second tube has no apertures in either the first tube or the second tube, said region being for separating the gas from the oil, sand and gas mixture. The apertures in the second tube have a diameter that is less than the diameter of the apertures in the first tube.
