The carrier has two side rails (16) which are fixed on the vehicle outer surface, and which are longitudinally parallel to each other. Each side rail has a channel (82) which extends over a larger part of its length. The carrier has at least one transverse rod (18) which extends from one side rail to the other. At least one fastener (24) is fixed at each end of the transverse rod. A housing is provided having a recess (32) and a base section (42), with base section having an opening (44). A locking member (64) projects from the base section, and has a neck section (68) which stretches through the opening in the recess and is movable in the direction of the opening. The carrier further comprises a manually operable actuating member (36), which is at least partially located in the recess and is movable by one or more fingers of a user.
