To apply a coating to both sides of a paper web, with an indirect application of liquid, one or both of the application gaps are fed either with a coating mass for the production of medium weight coated (MWC) paper or with a glue suspension for the production of light weight coated (LWC) paper. Also claimed is an applicator assembly with an applicator (A) to give an indirect fluid application to the web (1), with at least one associated drying unit (28, 18, 39). An initial spreader (S1) gives a direct coating application to the web, with its drying unit, and a similar spreader (S2) and dryer applies a coating to the other side of the web.
