To determine the amount of laundry placed within the rotating drum of a washing machine, at least one ultrasonic transmitter is coupled to the drum, for the ultrasonic waves to pass into the drum interior. At least one detector is in the washing machine drum, which receives the ultrasonic waves, and is coupled to an evaluation unit.
