A solid propellant gas generator incorporates staged (12, 14, 16) gas cooling and filtration so as to generate cool, clean gases having a composition suitable for use in an automobile airbag inflator. Carbon yarn (14) is used as a lightweight primary heat sink within the filter (10) thereby increasing the dimensional stability of the gas generator.
