The device has meters operated by train-actuated track switches on the boundaries between track sections. The meters count train wheels irrespective of direction and can be corrected or reset in the event of an error using the coincidence of counting results before and after a faulty metering point. A counting mechanism (AzR-Zp2) in one track section (GA2) is connected via data lines to a counting mechanism (AzR-Zp1) in the adjacent track section in one and/or other direction and obtains data about their count states at least indirectly for comparison with the number of switching pulses fed to it from the incoming or outgoing track switches.
