The present invention is based on the observation that the Vpr protein of lentiviruses, and in particular the Vpr protein of HIV, induces cell stasis and death when contacted with a cell. Based on this observation, the present invention provides methods of inducing cell stasis and death comprising the steps of contacting a cell with a Vpr protein or an analogue of a Vpr protein.
