1,174,576. Welding by pressure. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 22 Dec., 1966 [24 Dec., 1965], No. 54878/65. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In connecting a metal terminal pillar to a plate grid formed of dispersion strengthened lead for a lead acid secondary electric battery, a joint between the grid and the pillar or between the grid and a metal member which is itself secured to the pillar is effected by cold welding. A grid 10, Fig. 1, formed by extrusion and rolling from dispersion strengthened lead has an integral lug 11 with a tapered end 13 and this end 13 is lapped over a strip of lead alloy 12 also having a tapered end 14 in a die 15. A punch 16 having a working face 17 with semicircular ends and rounded edges is applied to the ends 12, 14 at a pressure of 12,200 p.s.i. to weld them together with 50% reduction. The bulging edges of the joint may be sheared off. The strips of a number of grids are then secured to a pillar by burning. In another embodiment, a number of dispersion strengthened lead grids 20 have integral lugs 21, Fig. 3, and these lugs are arranged in grooves 22 in a lead or lead alloy pillar 23 formed with an integral terminal and the pillar is compressed in a press to cold weld the lugs in the grooves. The materials to which the dispersion strengthened lead is cold welded may be a lead alloy containing tin and selenium or tin, calcium and silver or tin and calcium or it may be pure lead. |
