The device contains a magnetic field generator (20,20A,21,22) and a device (2) for altering the magnetic field produced. A magnetic field detector (3) is provided having a resistance which changes in value in response to a change in the amplitude of the magnetic field and the face of the magnetic field generator facing the detector slopes. The magnetic field generator can contain a magnet having a sloping outer face with a dished or triangular profile.
