A monitoring unit is for mains-operated domestic appliances, for coupling with electrical connections and has a detector associated with the connections. The detector determines mains parameters such as voltage, current, frequency and impedance. The monitoring unit also comprises a storage installation (23) for depositing certain operation conditions of the appliance with the corresponding mains parameters. An evaluator (21,29,31) reads the prevailing operating condition in accordance with the registered mains parameters.
