The optical transmission apparatus comprises: signal light generating means (201) for generating signal light modulated in accordance with an input signal; mark rate detection means (204) for detecting the mark rate of the input signal and outputting a signal indicative of an extraordinary mark rate when the detected mark rate is higher than a first value or lower than a second value; and shutting down means (203) for intercepting the output of said signal light generating means (201) for a predetermined period of time in response to an output signal of said mark rate detection means (204).
