The method of identification is carried out in a fuel supply system, in which the fuel is delivered from at least one pump from a low pressure region in a high pressure region, and the pressure is determinable in the HP region with at least one pressure sensor. At least two pressure values (P1, P2) at different time points are determined, and emanating from the pressure values a fuel balance is produced, and as a result of the balance faults can be identified. In the fuel amount balance in addition also taken in to account are at least one delivery amount (MF), an injection amount (ME), a return amount (MR) and/or a pressure regulating amount (MD).
