PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-mol.-wt. olefin copolymer without causing adhesion to a reactor by using a catalyst component which is obtd. by bringing a fine particulate carrier into contact with a compd. contg. a group 14 element and then with a compd. having active hydrogen atoms and treating the resultant product with a boron- or aluminum-contg. ionic compd. SOLUTION: The fine particulate carrier is, e.g. a metal oxide, pref. having an average particle size of 10-100μm and a specific surface area of 100-1,000m<2> /g. Examples of the compd. contg. a group 14 element are dimethyldichlorosilane and dimethylgermanium dichloride. The compd. having active hydrogen atoms is, e.g. a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol. The ionic compd. is represented by the formula: [M<4> (R<3> )p (R<4> )q (<5> )r (R<6> -Y)s ]<-> [Z]<+> (wherein M<4> is boron or aluinum; R<3> to R<5> are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, etc.; (p), (q), and (r) are each 0-3; (s) is 1-4; and Z is a monovalent cation). The catalyst component can be prepd. by mixing all the ingredients.
