PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cooling an optical fiber which uses a volatile cooling liquid in a drawing stage for the optical fiber and is capable of removing the cooling liquid from the optical fiber surface at the time of cooling. SOLUTION: This method for cooling the optical fiber consists in melting an optical fiber preform 1 by heating, drawing this preform, passing the optical fiber 3 right thereafter through a cooling pipe 10 and cooling the optical fiber. The volatile cooling liquid A is sprayed to the optical fiber 3 in the cooling pipe 10 and the optical fiber 3 is cooled by the latent heat of vaporization of the cooling liquid A. The cooling liquid A remaining on the surface of the optical fiber 3 may be surely removed by blowing air B to the optical fiber 3 from the lower part of the cooler 10. |
