Liquid or solid composition containing sulfonamides of the general formula: R1 R2 NS02 R3 R4 which are used alone or in admixtures. One to three of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is methyl, the other(s) being ethyl groups, or one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is a methoxyethyl, the remainder being methyl or alkyl groups. These sulfonamides are useful as aprotic solvents as media for organic reactions and/or synthesis, as ionically conductive material, as solid or gel polymer electrolytes, as liquid or solid electrolyte for electrochemical applications, such as batteries, or so-called rocking chair or lithium ion batteries.
