The control system is designed so that only when it detects that the phase output frequency of an alternating current generator (1) is greater than a pre-determined frequency, does it allow a smoothing capacitor (403) at the phase output to charge itself. The system includes a smoothing capacitor (403) designed to smooth the phase output of the a.c. generator (1). The system detects if the storage battery (7)` is charged by the rectified output of the a.c. generator and detects if the storage battery is charged as a function of the voltage level of the smoothing capacitor. It is characterised in that only when a frequency detection unit (411) senses that the frequency of the phase output of the a.c. generator is greater than a pre-determined frequency that the smoothing capacitor charges itself. The frequency detection unit (411) is a frequency/voltage converter and is designed to provide as output the frequency of an input voltage signal.
