The procedure consists of delivering the old excavated ballast via. a conveyor system (27, 28, 29) to a dispenser unit (24) which has its outlet (32) situated below or on a level with the tops of the newly-laid rails. The ballast spreader has a wheeled support (20) which travels along the newly-laid rails, and the outlet of its dispenser unit is made in at least three sections to deposit the ballast on the outside of the rails and in between them. The dispenser is equipped with a regulator to control its height above the track bed.
