PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic still camera containing a lens that can obtain high quality images by means of a solid-state imaging device. SOLUTION: An image I1 is obtained by reproducing digital signals acquired by an electronic still camera 30 on a display, and an image I2 is obtained by reading the image obtained by photographing an object by a photographing lens of the camera 30 with the use of a silver salt photosensitive material, having the sensitivity equivalent to a solid-state imaging device of the camera 30 by a scanner and reproducing the read image on the display in the same condition as the image I1. Then N sheets of images are obtained for each M types of objects and are compared with each other. When the image quality of the image I1 is higher than that of the image I2, an evaluation point '1' is decided. Then an evaluation point '0' is decided, when the image quality of the image I2 is higher than that of the image I1. Thus, a lens system 31 is designed to satisfy a condition, in which the total evaluation points is larger than (M×N×0.8).
