[Also in Divisions H1 and H4] A method of making an electro-optical device comprises providing an electro-optical crystal 2 with a plurality of slots, electrolessly depositing a metal lining within the slots, completely filling each slot with a second metal, exposing portions of the second metal and securing conducting wires thereto. A silicon block 20 is placed alongside the crystal 2, which is of LiNbO 3 , and moving strings 10 cut into the block 20 before cutting into the crystal so that the kerfs 12 cut in the latter have parallel sides. The strings pass through a housing 4, which contains a mixture 6 of aluminium oxide and water or the equivalent. The mixture 6 is picked up by a roller 8 and deposited on the strings 10. A second block 22 may be placed adjacent the crystal edge. A layer of copper is then electrolessly deposited in the kerfs and a layer of gold is electro-plated on the copper. Preferably, after the copper and gold films have been deposited the kerfs are not completely filled. The crystal is heated to about 400‹ C. and indium 32 at the same temperature is laid on top of the slots. The indium seeps into the slots and forms a eutectic with the gold. A side (S) of the crystal is lapped when the crystal is at room temperature to expose the indium on a fourth face, Fig. 2 (not shown). A very sharp chisel of sapphire or Al 2 O 3 is heated to over 400‹ C. to melt the indium 32 on to gold wires 34 thereby completing the device.
