PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element by which the color change of obliquely transmitted light is restrained without causing the color change in the light vertically transmitted through a circularity polarized light separating layer, which is excellent in the utilizing efficiency of light and capable of forming a crystal display device excellent in the brightness and the wideness of the angle of visibility. SOLUTION: A polarizing element is provided at least with a phase difference plate 3 whose refractive index in the thickness direction is higher at least on one side of the in-plate refractive indexes, and also whose transverse phase difference is 100 to 180nm, and with a circularly polarized light separating layer 1, and if necessary, with a polarizing plate having a dichroism substance. Further, a lighting device in which the polarizing elements are arranged on a plane light source through a circularly polarized light separating layer side, and also a liquid crystal display device in which the polarizing elements or the lighting device are arranged on the visual recognition back side of the liquid crystal display are device provided. A part of light obliquely incident on the circularly polarized light separating layer 1 is subjected to color change and transmitted as an elliptically polarized light, however, while it is subjected to color compensation while it is transmitted through the phase difference plate 3, so that a light of an intermediate color is provided when it is transmitted through the polarizing plate. |
