The system has a high load condition detector to detect a preset maximum load condition of the machine and a fuel booster to increase the fuel supply (Tout) when the machine is in the maximum load condition. A temperature memory stores the temperatures of the catalytic converter (15) related to the operating conditions of the machine and means are provided to determine correction factors for values read out from this store which are used to estimate the temperature of the catalytic converter.
