A metal and/or a metal compound capable of fixing the sulphur oxides, is treated with a reducing gas comprising hydrocarbon(s) (suitably hydrocarbons containing more than 3 C) and an inert diluent, such as water vapour, and the used gas containing sulphur dioxide is eliminated. Pref. the acceptor contains copper and/or copper oxide or the support used is combined with a vanadium compound and an alkali metal compound. Hydrocarbons recovered from the used gas containing SO2 may be reutilised in the process, suitably the gas is cooled to form a condensate of the hydrocarbons which is reused after evaporation. The process is particularly useful when the acceptor is used for removal of sulphur oxides from combustion gases.
