Straight-chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic sulphonic acids containing 10-30 C atoms are prepared by reacting the corresponding hydrocarbon with SO 2 /O 2 by subjecting the mixture to high energy radiation, transferring the reaction mixture to an extraction vessel containing a mixture comprising 20-40% sulphonic acid, 10-30% water, 25-45% of one or more straight-chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons and 4-8% H 2 SO 4 , to which water is fed to maintain the proportion of water at a constant level, withdrawing mixture having the said composition from the lower end of the extraction vessel and recycling the supernatant unreacted hydrocarbon from the extraction vessel to the reaction mixture. The mixture from the extraction vessel is heated to separate H 2 SO 4 and the remaining sulphonic acid and hydrocarbon are separated. The high energy radiation used may be gamma-rays or #-rays having a dose rate in the range 10<SP>4</SP>-10<SP>7</SP> rods/hour, radiation from a spent fuel element of a nuclear reactor or radiation from a nuclear reactor itself, X-rays or accelerated electrons. The molar ratio of SO 2 : O 2 is preferably greater than 2 : 1 and the reaction may be performed at a pressure of 0-50 atmospheres at 0-80‹ C. |
