Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic sulphonic acids are prepared by irradiating a gaseous mixture comprising SO 2 and O 2 with U.V. radiation, and then reacting the activated gaseous mixture so formed, without further irradiation, with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic (C 10-30 ) hydrocarbon. The irradiation may be effected while passing the gases through an inert liquid. The salts of the products are biologically degradable detergents. |
