One or more inflatable cushions (a,b) not attached to the patient's body are connected by pipes to a controlled pressure supply to support the joint. Pressure in the cushions is increased and reduced with adjustable amplitude and frequency, so as to lift and lower the joint area without causing pain. The flexible expanding cushions can be made of materials with different coefficients of expansion as desired, several of them being connected via separate pipes to one or more pressure sources, their functioning being programme-controlled. The connections between the cushions can be movable.
