<p>PURPOSE:To provide a process for producing titanium which continuously produces an ingot by executing reduction reaction, evaporation separation and capturing of formed titanium with the pool surface of-the molten titanium. CONSTITUTION:The metal titanium held in a crucible 1 of a type opened at top and below is melted by a heat input means 2 to form a pool 6 of the molten titanium. A titanium tetrachloride and an alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal are supplied atop the pool 6 and while the formed halide of the alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal is evaporated from the molten titanium, the formed titanium is captured in the pool 6 of the molten titanium and thereafter, the molten titanium is solidified and is drawn from the crucible 1 of the type opened at top and bottom to form the ingot 7. A water cooled copper crucible is preferably used for the crucible if the heat input means is plasma heating. A split type water cooled copper crucible is preferably used for the crucible if the heat input means is high-frequency induction heating or a combination of the high-frequency induction heating and plasma heating.</p> |
