The present invention pertains to a value on paper (a) comprised of a substrate of a given area, with a visible printed image (11) and, at least partially overprinted thereon, a mark (12). This mark (12) has material features, presents at least a machine-readable physical characteristic et covers the largest area of the paper document. Furthermore, the marking (12) meets a prescribed and measurable standard which permits to check, by machine-scanning of the marking (12), the correct pattern distribution and to recognize as defects omissions or partial additions from other genuine documents.
