The handle is for a bipolar surgical instrument includes a tubular shaft, handle, operating section and bipolar electrical connection. The handle and bipolar tubular shaft are detachably connected. The operating section, pivoting on the handle, actuates a bipolar tool at the far end of the shaft. The electrical connection is made with the tubular shaft. The connection is new in formation as an insert (43) which is plugged into a recess (41) in the handle (12). It makes a detachable snap fastening and it includes a clip projection and corresponding clip recess. Preferably the handle (12) and the insulator are made of polyether ketone or polyether ether ketone. These plastics can be sterilised.
