The cladding element (1) has a base layer having upper and lower faces, which lie opposite and next to the surface (2) to be cladded, respectively. Connection pieces (4,8) connect the cladding elements to each other or to the floor. Each cladding element has a base plate with an upper layer (3), forming the upper face. The base plates have recesses (5), on their long or transverse sides (6), which co-operate with the connection pieces, whose shapes expand to complement the recesses. Each connection piece co-operates with at least two cladding elements. The co-operation between the connection pieces and the cladding elements ensures that the cladding elements are jointless and releasably connected together.
