A vibrating plate (3) facing the mouthpiece is mounted so that it vibrates freely over a range larger than the mouthpiece. A drive element (6) intermittently stimulates the vibrating plate to eject ink droplets. The ink flow produces a controlled surface wave (S) which propagates to a centre point of the ink droplet ejection opening.
