The engine (1) has solenoid-operated gas valves, all of which at one or more cylinders (2-7) are shut on the overrun above a predetermined speed, so as to adjust reduced braking torque. The rotational speed of the water-pump (19) is reduced in proportion to the number of cylinders cut out. All cylinders can be cut out on the overrun, while the pump is controlled dependent on critical auxiliary machine temperatures. It can be switched off altogether on the overrun, cooling or heating of the machines (8) being carried out by smaller electrically-driven auxiliary pumps (21,23). The engine can have an antechamber with a valve controlling a passage between it and a main combustion chamber. This valve shuts when all the cylinder gas valves are shut on the overrun.
