The device has a microphone (10), which detects combustion noise that is fed back from the combustion chamber. The noise is then analysed in an appropriate manner. The combustion chamber noise is transmitted from a membrane (8) in the wall of the combustion chamber to a connected sound wave conductor (9) to the microphone. Preferably, the sound wave conductors of several internal combustion engine cylinders are fed to a single microphone. The membrane is preferably a component of a conduit (7) which can be fitted in a bore (6) in the cylinder head and which opens into the combustion chamber.
