A tamper-proof device for controlling the operation of equipment such as a motor vehicle, particularly a motorised bicycle or moped, whose operation is dependent on that of at least one electrical unit (8) with at least one protective cover (1, 4) for covering at least the portion of the unit (9) where a lead (5) is connected (7) to said electrical unit (8) to render it inaccessible. The device further comprises members (2, 4) for permanently joining the protective cover (1, 4) to the electrical unit (8), and a switch assembly (9) forming part of the electrical circuit consisting of the lead (5), and being controlled from without via a restricted-use control unit (10) such as a lock or the like. A vehicle provided with the device and a method for enhancing the theft protection of equipment using said device are also disclosed.
