A sorting apparatus (10) and method operative to selectively discharge articles, such as parcels (20), from a tilted, gated conveyor (25) to a desired output destination are disclosed. A powered roller (50) is mounted along the top of the gates (48) so that when a gate (48) is lowered to discharge a parcel (20), the parcel (20) engages the powered roller (50) and is drawn off the conveyor (25). The gate (48) can be raised before the parcel (20) has completely left the conveyor (25). The conveyor (25) can be constructed having a width narrower than the parcels (20).
