The steam main (010) supplies a heating station (1) with steam, through a branch pipeline (7) containing a pressure reducer (9), and with condensate, through a second branch line (8) containing a separator (11) and a non-return valve (12). The steam and condensate are combined in a mixer (6), e.g. a spray mixer, immediately prior to passing through the heat exchanger (5). It is then returned to the steam generator via a second condensate line (23) having a pump (27) to increase pressure when needed. The steam pressure at the steam inlet (13) to the mixer is equal to or less than the condensate pressure at the condensate inlet (14). The steam main can optionally feed an intermediate vessel from which separate steam and condensate lines feed the mixer.
