1,126,227. Filtering and decanting liquids. R. E. SAINT ANDRE. 1 Sent., 1965 [18 Nov., 1964], No. 37391/65. Heading B1D. The apparatus comprises a plurality of filtration units mounted above a decantation vessel and each containing one or more horizontally-disposed filter elements, in which filtering is effected by passing the liquid to be filtered in through the top of a filtration unit and inwardly through the filter element(s) therein, and in which cleaning of a filter element is effected by passing clean liquid outwardly through the element and conveying the resulting effluent to the decantation vessel, each element being surmounted by a deflector coaxial therewith whose longitudinal edges lie approximately in the horizontal plane through the axis of the element. Unfiltered liquid, &c., is supplied to the top of a housing 1 at 6 and flows down the upper surface of a symmetrically-disposed hemicylindrical deflector 7 to be filtered inwardly at F and G through an element 5 located within the deflector. Residual solid and cleaning liquid resulting from a backflushing operation flows to the bottom of housing 1 and is discharged therefrom through a spray cone 10 to a decantation vessel 4, Fig. 2. The vessel 4 is surmounted at one end by a dome 14 having an overflow pipe 15 opening into it at the top for returning supernatant liquid to a storage tank. Sludge and the like are discharged from the bottom of vessel 4 by a valve 13 controlled electrically by a system associated with a condenser-probe in such a way that when the sludge reaches a certain upper level the valve is opened, and when it falls to a certain lower level the valve is closed, but otherwise remains closed. Preferably the apparatus is supplied by a large;-size low-speed pump to avoid emulsifying the components of the unfiltered material. The apparatus may be mounted on board ship.
|
