An air bag has a valve in its housing wall which valve is moved to an at least partially closed position during the inflation of the air bag in response to movement of the front part of the air bag, said valve in its open position allowing gas generated by a gas generator 24 within the housing to exhaust 23 to a space outside the housing. The valve may be controlled by an elongate flexible element 6 connected to the front part of the air bag. The valve may comprise a rotatable diffuser 2 with two apertured regions 3, 4 one with a greater cross-sectional area than the other, or a shutter (37 fig 8). The shutter (57 fig 9) may be moved by a motor (58 fig 9) under the control of a controller (62 fig 9) responsive to the movement of an elongate element (59 fig 9) connected to the front part of the air bag. The controller may also be responsive to temperature and/or the weight of the person to be protected by the air bag and/or the position of the person to be protected by the air bag. |
