A composition to be administered before radio-logical examination comprises a mixture of at least one edible but indigestible cellulose compound and at least one polyhydric alcohol, the alcohol being present in an amount sufficient to control hydration of the cellulose compounds so as to allow essentially free passage from the mouth through the stomach, said cellulose compound being present in an amount sufficient to effect homogenous emulsification of the colon contents of the patient. An X-ray opaque substance, e.g. BaSO 4 of particle size up to 50Á, I 2 may be included. The cellulose compound may be methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, methyl-ethyl cellulose and hydroxy-, carboxy, and sodium derivatives of cellulose. The polyhydric alcohol may be sorbitol and/or glycerol; arabitol; erythritol; mannitol; and the alcohols derived from alose, altrose, talose, galactose, sorbose, xylose, ribose, rhamnose and fructose. A preferred composition comprises parts by weight of cellulose compound, 100-250 parts of polyhydric alcohol and 50 parts BaSO 4 .</p> |
