PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sugar alcohol at a lower cost by continuous catalytic hydrogenation of a saccharide so as to raise its conversion rate in the presence of a catalyst, i.e., an alloy molded form prepared by mixing element(s) belonging to the iron group of subgroup VIII in the periodic table with group IV and/or group V activated element(s). SOLUTION: A saccharide (e.g. D-xylose,α-D-glucose, 4-O-β-D- galactopyranosyl-α-D-glucopyranose) each corresponding to an epimer-free sugar alcohol (xylitol, sorbitol, 4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-α-D-sorbitol or 4-O-α-D- glucopyranosyl-α-D-sorbitol) is continuously hydrogenated by fixed bed process at 20-70 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of 100-400 bar in the presence of a catalyst, i.e., a nonsupport molded form 20-220 N in compressive strength with an inner surface area of 10-100m<2> /g prepared from an alloy resulted from mixing at least one element belonging to the iron group of subgroup VIII in the periodic table with group IV and/or group V activated element(s).
|
