PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydroformylating an olefin improved in yield and hydroformylation selectivity. SOLUTION: A relevant olefin is hydroformylated in the presence of a cobalt catalyst-contg. organic phase to form an alcohol which, in turn, is hydrogenated to obtain the objective 7-18C alcohol. Wherein, the cobalt catalyst is formed by reaction of an aqueous cobalt salt solution with a synthetic gas in the presence of a suitable organic solvent, and the cobalt catalyst-contg. organic phase is obtained by extraction of the resultant cobalt catalyst from the aqueous phase by the use of an appropriate organic extractant. In this case, cobalt catalyst formation, extraction of the catalyst formed into the organic phase and the hydroformylation are conducted through a single step process, respectively. |
