PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having an ethynyl group at the chiral-side terminal useful for a liquid crystal display element having antiferroelectricity. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R<1> is a (substituted) 1-18C alkyl; R<2> is CH3 or CF3 ; W is a single bond, O, COO, OCO, etc.; X, Y and Z are each a single bond, COO or C≡C; rings A, B, C and D are each a (F-substituted) 1,4-phenylene,2,6-naphthylene, etc.; (m) and (n) are each 1,0; (k)=1-10]. A compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula II with an alcohol of formula III using a dehydrating-condensing agent such as polyphosphoric acid ethyl or dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. Further, an intermediate of the compound is also useful as a new optically active compound and used as a blending component to a liquid crystal composition. |
