PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hepatitis C virus binding protein, useful for opening a way for the development of a future treating agent for hepatitis C and enabling the suppression of the proliferation of hepatitis C virus by finding an especially essential element participating in the translation from a virus gene to a protein in the proliferation mechanism of hepatitis C virus. SOLUTION: This hepatitis C virus binding protein has the following properties. (1) It has a molecular weight of 2.5kDa (k-Dalton), (2) it can be bound to IRES of hepatitis C virus gene, (3) the translation efficiency of hepatitis C virus gene is remarkably depressed when the protein is not bound to IRES of hepatitis C virus gene, (4) it does not bind to the IRES of a mutant hepatitis C virus gene having a base sequence constituting the stem of α-branch structure (nt47-67) substituted with another base sequence and (5) it can be bound to the IRES of a mutant hepatitis C virus gene having a base sequence constituting the loop of α-branch structure (nt47-67) substituted with another base sequence. |
