A general purpose dental handpiece (20) comprises a shank portion (24) rigidly fixed to a non-articulable head portion (26) adapted to removably support a drill burr (28) along a burr axis (g) disposed at an angle of 105??U2?? with respect to the axis (f) of the shank portion. The angle of orientation of the burr axis is an optimum angle for performing most routine dental procedures in contrast to the right angle orientation of conventional general purpose dental handpieces.
