PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve light shieldability by incorporating at least a resin component and light shieldable particulates into a sealing material for packing desired liquid into the spacing between substrates facing each other and hermetically sealing these substrates. SOLUTION: The sealing material 4 for packing the desired liquid into the spacing between a pair of the substrates facing each other, for example, a color filter substrate 2 and a counter electrode substrate 3 and hermetically sealing the substrates contains at least the resin components and the light shieldable particulates. Bisphenol F type, bisphenol A type diglycidyl ether, etc., are used as the resin components constituting the sealing material. Carbon black having an average grain size of about 0.01 to 0.5μm and resin coated carbon black formed by subjecting this carbon black to grafted coating of polyoxyethylene alkyl ether, etc., are used for the light shieldable particulates constituting the sealing material. The light shieldable particulates are preferably incorporated into the sealing material within a range of 5 the 10 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. resin components.
