摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart a possibility to allow the storage of data without an energy source with lower dependency on visual angles and with a short switching time to the liquid crystal cell and to eliminate the difficulties in bistable SSFCL(surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals) and SBFCL (bistable ferroelectric display cell having a short pitch). SOLUTION: This liquid crystal cell has a liquid crystal cell 21 having ferroelectric chiral smectic double refractive liquid crystal layer and a polarizing means. The cell 20 has a pair of parallel plates 22, 23 confining the liquid crystal layer 21. Both plates 22, 23 respectively have surface structural bodies to align the molecules of the liquid crystal layer 21 and electrodes 26, 27 for generating electric fields. The liquid crystal layer 21 has a film thickness (d), spontaneous polarization >50nC/cm<2> and satd. switching angle >45 deg.. In such a case, the liquid crystal layer 21 contains polymerized molecules. The film thickness (d) is made larger than the spiral pitch of the unpolymerized liquid crystal layer in the state of having no cells. As the process for manufacturing the liquid crystal cell, the ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture in an unpolymerized state is packed into the previously prepd. cell and is illuminated with light of the same intensity from both sides in order to polymerize the cell. Symmetrical alternate voltages are impressed on the cell during the time of the polymn. treatment.
