Stabilized organic peroxide compositions comprise a finely divided admixture of a solid organic peroxide and a solid organic plasticizer which is a plasticizer for polymerized unsaturated esters and is soluble in such polymers, the plasticizer being inert with respect to the peroxide, having a melting-point above 40‹ C. and below the decomposition temperature of the peroxide and constituting at least 20% by wt. of the composition. Specified solid peroxides include diacyl peroxides, ketone peroxides, diketone peroxides, esters of percarboxylic acids and alkylidene diperoxides. Suitable solid plasticizers are esters of phthalic, benzoic and phosphoric acids, sulphonamides and chlorinated paraffins. Preferred compositions contain 40-75% by wt. peroxide. The compositions may be prepared (a) from the pre-formed components by simple mixing of the powdered solids or by coating the solid peroxide particles in an aqueous suspension with molten plasticizer or a solution of plasticizer in a volatile solvent, or (b) synthesizing the peroxide in the presence of the plasticizer, or (c) simultaneously synthesizing both peroxide and plasticizer during the mixing procedure, e.g. a dibenzoyl peroxide/phenyl benzoate mixture can be prepared from benzoyl chloride, phenol and an inorganic peroxide. Examples describe the preparation of compositions in which the peroxide is dibenzoyl peroxide, 1 - hydroxy - 11 - hydroxydicyclohexyl peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, di-t.-butyl di-perphthalate, or 3,5 - dimethyl - 3,5 - dihydroxydioxolane-1,2 and the plasticizer is dicyclohexyl phthalate, o/p-toluene sulphonamide, phenyl benzoate, ethylene glycol dibenzoate, chloroparaffin, diphenyl phthalate or tri-p-toluyl phosphate. |
