<p>Foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, surgical materials, and the like, are subjected to antiseptic irradiation, especially with alpha-rays, in the presence of an agent capable of binding oxygen under the irradiation, preferably silica gel having a large specific surface area. The materials to be sterilised are packed in a gas-impermeable envelope. The oxygen-binding agent is placed inside the package, possibly in a separate, gas-permeable envelope. By this method, the oxidation, of the material and/or the envelope during the irradiation is prevented.</p> |
