PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a torque measuring method in which a torque can be measured easily and with high accuracy by a method wherein three points are marked on a test shaft and a change in an optical pattern is detected. SOLUTION: A point A1 , a point B1 which is at a distance (b) in the axial direction from the point A1 and a point A2 at a distanceδ0 in the axial circumferential direction from the point A1 are marked on the surface of a test shaft 1. Then, respective values of the distance (b) and the distanceδ0 as well as of the transverse elastic modules G and the diameter (d) of the test shaft 1 are stored in a computing device. While the surface of the test shaft 1 is being irradiated with light from a light source, the test shaft 1 is turned. When a load is applied to an output end, the test shaft 1 is twisted due to the torque, the positional relationship between the point A1 and the B1 is changed, reflected light from the surface of the test shaft 1 at this time is received, and its quantity of light is converted into an electric signal in real time so as to be sent to the computing device. The electric signal is detected as a change in an optical pattern by the computing device, and a required time td and a required time t0 are computed. Then, a torque T is found by a computing expression of T=G (πd<4>δ0 /32b)(td /t0 ).
